Harvest Monday, December 9th, 2013

Before the bitter cold moved in I harvested two more baskets. One was filled with mizuna and tatsoi. I had had some bok choy in the garden too, but it didn't survive the cold. It was looking very ratty. Luckily tatsoi is a lot more hardy.

I also harvested a basket of spinach, though I forgot to photograph it. It will be the last spinach of the year. I don't protect it and the leaf quality will start to go down hill fast as we see colder and colder weather. By the end of the week we might even see single digits (-13C and lower for those of you that use a reasonable measuring system for your temperature). The spinach will survive our temperatures with no problem over the winter. Most of the older leaves will have died by spring, but the new leaves will be quick growing.

  1. Good looking tatsoi and mizuna. Planted both years ago. Should look into planting them again next year as they are both very hardy.

  2. It's too bad the bok choy didn't make it but the tatsoi and mizuna sure look pretty. It's not supposed to get quite that cold here, though it's still been colder than normal for December. We've got snow cover at the moment which should help insulate things a bit.

  3. My harvests are more in the way of decorations than food this week! I'm hoping I might be able to pull the last of my leeks later today, though.

  6. Such a harvest for early December!. As I write this I see your temperature is 35 degrees. I just checked my garden and it is 33 degrees at 7 am two blocks from the ocean!

  7. I've got one last post with colorful veggies that I raked in before the big chill hit here, but the garden is shot now. A few nights in the low 20's has really done things in, I'm not sure I'll even get my usual winter veggies. I'm glad to see that you managed to get a final few veggies from the garden too.

  9. Beautiful tatsoi! I love that stuff, have a bit growing too. Never thought of mizuna for fall, maybe because I was inundated with it in the spring and my fall spinach was an epic fail. You are lucky to have it!

  10. Sorry Daphne, I had no harvests this week, so I have nothing to contribute to Harvest Monday. I have Pasnips in the ground, I have some Cavolo Nero that is pickable, and a few remaining Brussels Sprouts, but I can't genuinely claim to have picked anything this time!

  11. Minus 13 degrees C is something I can't even contemplate. We barely get minus 1-2 degrees C in winter here. I'm amazed you can grow anything at those temps, so well done.

  13. Well, your greens look a lot healthier than the ones I picked today! I have given up for the winter and will be buying my organic lettuce and organic spinach from the store for awhile. It is December so I am thankful to have lasted this long picking from our garden! Nancy

  19. That's one thing I love about tatsoi - it really is ultra hardy with a little protection. We got a dusting of slushy snow yesterday on the South Shore. Winter is definitely here!
