Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Well our house is sold. The old garden is just a memory now. I thought I'd share the last photos with you.

The first Cherokee tomatoes were very normally shaped even with the megablooms I had, but these newer ones that set in the high heat look pretty funky.

Does anyone remember the sunflowers from last year? I collected seed from Lemon Queen (6' tall), but I was also growing Music Box(18" tall). Well the sunflowers grew 6' tall again. But some of them have a faded version of the orange inner rings of Music Box. So they cross pollinated. And now I know the height gene is dominant since they are all tall. If only I could save the seed from these. It would be so much fun to see what would come from the F2s.

I'm leaving today to visit family for a week. I'll be sitting in the shade at the family house on Lake of the Ozarks. I'm leaving the tomatoes at the new house full of promise. So many tomatoes are on those vines but not a one has ripened yet. I wonder if I'll be the first to pick them when I get home, or if my townhouse mates will have picked the first ones while I'm gone. They seemed quite happy to be taking care of the garden for a week. Well they seemed to be happy to have the harvests for a week at least. I have no clue if they were thrilled about the actual watering chore I gave them.

I may not have access to the internet down at the lake. If not, everyone have a good week without me, but never fear I'll schedule the Monday Harvest post before I leave.

  1. How sad/wonderful that it's over. We've been talking about selling, but I think I would have to plow under the whole garden. It makes me sad thinking about it. Have fun on your vacation. Hopefully the tomatoes will wait for you.

  2. Happy trailes and safe travels to you. You put so much work into that garden in the years past that it does have to be hard, but it's so nice that the new owners want to keep it up.

  3. Farewell good garden. I feel quite connected to your little patch of earth = from the pictures and blog writing. I will miss it too - but look forward to getting better acquainted with your new garden and watching you transform it into your own beautiful space. Have a great week away.

  4. Your leaving the new owners a nice bounty. Enjoy your week away and even if your townhouse mates pick the first ripe tomato, you will pick YOUR first tomato on return and that is something to look forward to.

  5. It is sad to see you leave the old garden, but it's also wonderful that the new owners aren't going to turn it into a patch of turf. I'm looking forward to watching you turn your new garden into a vegetable paradise. Have fun on your trip!

  6. Have fun! When you come back, I was wondering if you would like to talk about setting up some sort of seed exchange for the Harvest Mondayers. People are growing such lovely things I think we should all share! Let me know!

  7. Enjoy your well earned trip! Perhaps a vacation is a good way to transition between gardens. I'll miss hearing about the old garden though. So much character there!

  11. It's very nice and generous of you to leave such a lovely garden and bountiful harvest (to come) to the new owners, I hope they will care for it as you have in the past.

Have a safe trip and enjoy the time off.

  12. Congratulations on selling your house! I would be so stoked if I bought a house with an amazing vegetables garden like yours. Garden beds, trellises, and live vegetables and flowers! Enjoy your time at the lake, and see you next week!

  13. Ooooh, take me along! I've always wanted to visit that area of Missouri. My ancestors settled in Miller County, and many are buried there. Mr. Granny said we could go there when the dog died. He died 12 years ago. I'm still waiting.

  16. Have a great vacation! It's a little bittersweet, knowing that the garden you've worked in and loved for so long is going to be someone else's now, but then you have another garden to transform into something beautiful to your liking. I'm sure the new owners are happy that you left them such a wonderful piece of heaven. Now it's time for you to go relax and have fun. I'm leaving for a few days also. My oldest son and I are going to Oregon to work on the family ranch. It's much cooler there!

  17. What a nice house warming gift to leave a vegetable garden. Those are some pretty weird Cherokee's. I've had a few crinkly ones but never that crinkly!
